Coimbatore: A horrific case of sexual assault in Pothanur, Coimbatore came to a conclusion as Murugesh, a 51-year-old daily wage labourer, received a life sentence for raping a 5-year-old girl. The incident, which took place on March 21, 2020, in the Ganesapuram area, came to light when the young victim informed her parents. Distressed by their daughter's ordeal, they promptly contacted a child welfare officer.
The welfare officer immediately reported the incident to the Pothanur police, leading to Murugesh's arrest under the POCSO Act. Following the court proceedings that ensued, Judge Kulashekaran pronounced the life sentence on May 14, imposing a further fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict and ordering the payment of Rs 5 lakh compensation to the survivor, paid by the state.
