Bhavani Dam in Mettupalayam Nearing Full Capacity

Recent heavy rains have significantly increased water levels at Bhavani Dam in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, with the dam likely to reach full capacity soon, easing drinking water shortages.

Coimbatore: Bhavani Dam, a crucial water source for Coimbatore, located in Mettupalayam, is nearing its full capacity due to sustained rainfall in the region. Despite last year's lower rainfall and continuous water extraction for drinking needs, the water level in the 100-foot-high dam had been declining. Just two weeks ago, the water level was below 60 feet. Similarly, the Siruvani Dam, which is 50 feet high, also saw its water level drop below 12 feet, leading to widespread drinking water shortages across Coimbatore.

In response, water was redirected from Upper Bhavani Dam in Nilgiris district to Bhavani Dam to maintain supply. Recently, the Coimbatore district has experienced favorable rainfall, particularly in the catchment areas of Bhavani Dam. From May 17 to 18, the area recorded 17 centimeters of rain.

Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the water level in Bhavani Dam has now reached 84 feet. If the rains persist, the dam is expected to fill up within the next couple of days. This increase in water levels at Bhavani Dam is anticipated to alleviate the drinking water crisis in Coimbatore.
