Silk Farmers in Udumalai Demand Drought Relief Measures

Over a hundred silk farmers gathered at the Silk Development Office in Myvadi near Udumalai, demanding drought relief measures due to a significant drop in silk production caused by disease and climate conditions.

Coimbatore: In a significant assembly at the Silk Development Department in Myvadi near Udumalai, over a hundred silk farmers rallied under the banner of the Tamil Nadu Silk Cocoon Producers Welfare Association. Addressing a series of demands to the Assistant Director's office, the farmers presented a petition to Assistant Director Manisha.

Tamil Nadu, home to over 25,000 silk farmers, sees a substantial number of individuals directly and indirectly employed in silk production. However, recent reports highlight a severe impact on silk production due to non-virulent silkworms and adverse climatic conditions over the past four months. According to the farmers, nearly 30 percent of silk cocoon production has suffered, with some areas experiencing complete failure.

The issues extend to discrepancies in insurance settlements and the demand for adequate drought relief. Farmers are calling on the Tamil Nadu government and the Silk Development Department to provide financial assistance of Rs. 40,000 per acre as a calculated measure and Rs. 600 per bundle as relief for the affected silk producers.

The gathering underscores the ongoing struggles in the silk farming industry and the critical need for supportive measures to sustain livelihoods in this sector.
