Coimbatore Residents Protest Due to 19-Day Water Supply Disruption

Residents of Ward 43 in Coimbatore, specifically Velanthavalam Kondasamy Naidu Street, have not received water for 19 days, causing severe distress and potential protests.

Coimbatore: Residents in Velanthavalam Kondasamy Naidu Street in Ward 43 have been facing acute water scarcity for the last 19 days, leading to widespread frustration among the inhabitants. This area, home to over 500 residences, is witnessing a dire situation as the municipal corporation fails to provide necessary services.

The situation has escalated over the past year following the installation of new pipes under the Sewage Treatment Plan. Despite the promise of improved infrastructure, the municipal response has been lackluster, with water supply being irregular and insufficient. The locals accuse the ward councillor, Mallika Purushothaman, of being unresponsive, leading to their growing agitation.

Residents have reported that even the newly laid pipes have failed to deliver water as expected. In addition to the water supply issue, the area has not seen drainage clearance for over two and a half years, compounding the problems during the rainy season when stormwater mixes with sewage, flooding homes.

As the crisis continues with no sign of resolution, the residents have been warned of a large-scale protest if the situation does not improve. In response to the potential unrest, police engaged in discussions with the community, and municipal officials have been called to address the grievances.

Following the meeting between residents and city authorities, assurances have been made to address the water crisis promptly. The community remains hopeful yet skeptical, prepared to escalate their efforts if necessary to ensure their basic needs are met.
