FIR Filed in Kallakurichi Spurious Liquor Tragedy

On June 19, 2024, at 11:30 AM, an FIR was registered at the Kallakurichi Police Station concerning a case of spurious liquor consumption resulting in multiple casualties.


Coimbatore: Today, a grievous incident was reported and addressed at the Kallakurichi Police Station. At 11:30 AM, Inspector R. Anandan was presented with a complaint by Dinakaran, a resident of East Street, Karunapuram, Kallakurichi. Based on this complaint, a case was registered regarding a tragic event caused by the consumption of spurious liquor.

The complainant outlined that victims, including his father, suffered severe health complications after consuming locally sold illicit liquor. Multiple fatalities were reported due to the incident. The health crisis unfolded quickly, pushing local authorities into action.

Further investigations revealed that the liquor was sold near the local burial grounds by various individuals including Kannukutti @ Govindaraj, his brother Thamodhiran, and Govindaraj's wife Vijaya, who have been engaging in this illegal activity for several days.

On June 18, 2023, around 7 PM, the victims purchased and consumed the liquor. The following morning, they exhibited severe symptoms including abdominal pain and vomiting. They were rushed to the Sanjeevi Hospital on Durgam Road, Kallakurichi. Unfortunately, despite medical interventions, the victims succumbed to the effects.

The complaint has led to the seizure of the bodies and subsequent police action. The FIR has been filed under criminal case number 417/2024, sections 304(2) IPC & 4(1)(i), 4(1-A) TNP Act. The matter has been escalated to Kallakurichi Criminal Justice Court No. 1 and relevant higher authorities for further actions.
