Farmers resort to begging stir condemning central government

The members of Joint Movement of All Farmers of Tamil Nadu created a flutter by resorting to a begging stir in Pudukottai today.

They resorted to this novel protest condemning the centre for turning blind eye to the ongoing stir by Tamil Nadu farmers in New Delhi.

Carrying begging bowls and stripped to their waist, the farmers resorted to begging stir near the Chinnappa Park. The movement’s district president Ravi led the agitation. The farmers also begged alms from the passengers travelling in buses and the occupants of cars and other vehicles that passed through the area.

Because of the inability of the centre to get water released in time, delta farmers could not save the standing samba paddy crop earlier this year and kuruvai paddy crop also could not be taken up for five years in row, the farmers said.

The farmers claimed that drinking water scarcity and crop loss has affected 12 districts in the State and in particular,  farming on 28 lakh acres has been affected resulting in a loss of over Rs 50,000 crore.

The centre has not cared to consider the pleas of the protesting farmers whose stir has entered its 32nd day. Similarly, the state government has also not cared to entertain the genuine demands of farmers, they said.

Later, they took out a procession from Chinnappa Park to Head Post Office via Anna statue and resorted to begging stir.

The farmers also condemned the Delhi police for resorting to lathicharge on the hapless agitating farmers.
