Chennai: In a significant development, Minister Geetha Jeevan announced new initiatives under the Social Welfare and Women's Development department in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today. The government has allocated Rs. 2 crores to provide Rs. 1 lakh each towards the purchase of 200 GPS-equipped pink autos to ensure the safety of women in Chennai.
Additionally, an investment of Rs. 1 crore will renovate women's hostels in Thiruvallur, Pudukkottai, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, and Madurai. Furthermore, the government will distribute Rs. 1 crore in grants to empower 200 women including physically challenged, impoverished, and unsupported individuals, by providing Rs. 50,000 each for self-employment opportunities.
Geetha Jeevan also announced that child marriage prevention awareness boards would be installed across all government and private higher secondary schools at an estimate of Rs. 62.83 lakhs. These initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to enhancing women's safety and economic independence across the state.
