Coimbatore VOC Gym Members Request Fee Reduction to Support Students and Seniors

Members of the VOC Gym in Coimbatore have requested the Corporation to reduce the gym's monthly fee from Rs 300 to Rs 100 to aid students, seniors, and disabled youths.

Coimbatore: The VOC Gym, located on corporation land near Nehru Stadium since 1991, is facing requests from its members to reduce the current monthly membership fee. Established with public-purchased equipment and managed by the VOC Gym Trust, the gym has been a training ground for various community members including students, senior citizens, and disabled youths.

One of the gym's members expressed concerns over the recent hike in fees, "Earlier, more than 60 people frequented the gym daily. However, membership has notably dropped in the past two months after the monthly fee was raised to Rs 300." The member highlighted that nearby corporation gym at Gandhi Park charges a significantly lower fee of Rs 100.

The demand for fee reduction has been made to make the facility more accessible to students and economically weaker sections of the society. A Coimbatore Corporation official acknowledged the requests, stating, "We are currently charging Rs 300 based on a council resolution. We've received requests for a reduction, which we are considering. Presently, 45 members who have paid the fee are still accessing the gym. Plans are underway to propose a reduced rate of Rs 150 for students pending council approval." The decision aims to balance operational costs with community service.
