Lawyers Continue Protest in Coimbatore Against Legal Reforms

Lawyers in Coimbatore are protesting for the second day against the renaming of IPC, Cr PC, and IEA into BNS, BNSS, and BS in Hindi as Bharatiya Niyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nahrik Surasha, and Bharatiya Sashya Adhinayam respectively.

Coimbatore: For the second consecutive day, lawyers in Coimbatore have intensified their protests at the courthouse gates. This comes in response to the recent legal reforms by the central government involving the renaming of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr PC), and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA) into Hindi versions named Bharatiya Niyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nahrik Surasha (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sashya Adhinayam (BS).

The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar Association announced a withdrawal from court duties from July 1st to 8th to mark their dissent. The protests started with a fasting strike on the first day, followed by the current rally where over fifty lawyers gathered, holding banners and raising slogans against the changes. They argue that these reforms could detrimentally impact the judicial procedures and the principle of a fair trial.

The lawyers' association has also planned protests in front of central government offices across all districts tomorrow, leading to a major protest march in Tiruchirappalli on the 8th of July.
