Massive Fire Engulfs Hosiery Unit in Tirupur, Causes Extensive Damage

A devastating fire broke out in a hosiery manufacturing unit near Kalaivani Theater in Tirupur, destroying goods worth lakhs and damaging machinery. Over 1000 workers escaped unhurt.

Tirupur: A major fire incident occurred at a hosiery manufacturing unit in Anupparpalayam area of Tirupur on Monday morning, causing significant damage to property and machinery. The three-story building, located near Kalaivani Theater, houses multiple hosiery businesses.

Thirunavukkarasu, a resident of Anupparpalayam, operates a hosiery company on the second floor of the building in partnership with his friend Jagadish. The first and third floors are occupied by another hosiery unit owned by Senthil. More than a thousand workers are employed in the second-floor unit.

The fire reportedly started on the first floor, where banyan clothes and cardboard boxes were stored. Thick black smoke suddenly erupted from the materials, and within moments, flames engulfed the entire first floor. Panicked employees from the upper floors rushed out of the building, raising alarms.

Initial attempts by the workers to douse the fire proved futile. The Tirupur North Fire Station was immediately alerted. Upon receiving the information, two fire tenders rushed to the spot. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control.

Despite their efforts, the fire caused extensive damage. Hosiery products worth several lakhs of rupees and numerous cardboard boxes were completely destroyed in the inferno. Additionally, more than 100 machines on the first floor suffered heat damage, rendering them inoperable.

The Anupparpalayam Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. They are exploring whether an electrical short circuit triggered the incident or if there were other contributing factors.

The incident has raised concerns about fire safety measures in industrial units in the region. Local authorities are expected to conduct safety audits in similar establishments to prevent such occurrences in the future.
