Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation Retirees Protest Against State Government in Mettupalayam

Over 200 retired transport workers staged a demonstration in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, demanding dearness allowance, medical insurance, and other benefits from the Tamil Nadu government.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation Retirees' Welfare Association staged a protest against the state government in Mettupalayam on July 4, putting forth various demands. More than 200 retired transport workers gathered in front of the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation office on Mettupalayam Road near Sai Baba Colony to participate in the demonstration.

The protesters raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu government, emphasizing their longstanding grievances. Their primary demands included the immediate disbursement of dearness allowance to retired transport workers as per court orders, implementation of a medical insurance scheme similar to that of government employees, and the payment of the remaining 40% of the 2013 contract wage hike.

Additionally, the association called for the prompt release of family welfare funds for workers who died while in service and the immediate distribution of STERBS (State Transport Employees Retirement Benefit Scheme) for those who retired as per the 2016 agreement. They also urged the government to provide employment to the family members of workers who lost their lives during service.

The demonstration aimed to draw attention to the plight of retired transport workers and their families. The protesters emphasized that their demands were crucial for their financial stability and overall well-being in their post-retirement years.

As the protest continued, the retirees expressed their determination to continue their agitation until their demands were met by the state government. The demonstration highlighted the ongoing issues faced by retired transport workers in Tamil Nadu and their struggle for better post-retirement benefits.
