Herd of Elephants Camps Near Navmalai Road for Third Consecutive Day

A herd of elephants with calves has been camping along the Navmalai road near Pollachi for the past three days, causing concern among locals and students traveling through the area.

Coimbatore: A herd of elephants, including calves, has been camping along the Navmalai road near Pollachi for the third consecutive day, causing anxiety among local residents and students who regularly use this route.

Navmalai, which falls under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, houses an electricity board residential area with over a hundred residents. Students from this area commute daily to Aliyar, Angalakurichi, and Pollachi for their studies.

The presence of the elephant herd along the road from Aliyar to Navmalai has raised concerns among commuters, especially students, who are now cautiously navigating the area. The situation has become more alarming as the elephants ventured into the residential areas last night, feeding on jackfruits from trees in the vicinity.

Forest department officials have responded to the situation by implementing a rotational monitoring system to keep track of the elephant movements. They are working to ensure the safety of both the residents and the wild animals.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of human-elephant conflict in the region, as urban expansion continues to encroach upon wildlife habitats. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any elephant sightings to the forest department immediately.
