Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Clarifies Viral Map of Villages to be Annexed

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran addresses the viral map claiming to show villages set to be annexed by the city. He clarifies the map's origin and the current status of expansion plans.

Coimbatore: A viral map circulating on social media, purportedly showing villages to be annexed by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, has been addressed by Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran. The commissioner has clarified that the map was not created by the corporation and that no final decisions have been made regarding the expansion.

Recently, news emerged that the Tamil Nadu government had sought proposals from the Coimbatore district administration for expanding the corporation's boundaries. This led to speculation about which neighboring municipalities, town panchayats, and village panchayats might be incorporated into the expanded city limits.

Following these reports, a map titled "Villages to be merged with Coimbatore Corporation" began circulating rapidly on social media platforms. Many believed it to be authentic. The map included about 20 villages, such as Vellamadai, Agraharasamakulam, Keeranatham, Neelambur, Irugur, Malumichampatti, Theethipalayam, Vedapatti, and Pannimadai.

Addressing the issue, Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran stated, "The map that went viral on social media was not created by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation. While there are plans to expand the corporation, we have not yet finalized which areas will be included. A draft report on this matter has not been prepared yet."

Sources indicate that the corporation is considering merging some panchayats adjacent to Coimbatore city. Once these deliberations are complete, a draft report will be prepared and submitted. The commissioner's clarification aims to dispel misinformation and assure the public that the expansion process is still in its preliminary stages.
