'Mischievous' calf shifted to Varagaliyar Elephant Camp

On 14th March, a 3-year-old injured elephant calf was rescued by the forest department from Thadagam area and was sent to Sadivayal Elephant Camp for treatment. The calf had sustained severe injuries to its trunk and after continued at the Sadivayal camp the calf showed good improvement.

Hence, on 14th April, the forest officials decided to let the calf free. The officials shifted the calf from Sadivayal camp to Pillur forest range. It is reported that the calf has been causing menace to the locals of villages near Pillur.

The locals of Aadhimadhiyanur hamlet near Pillur had complained to the forest officials that this 'mischievous' calf has been targeting their homes and farmlands. 'A couple of days back, the calf entered a residential area and tried to pluck a bunch of jack fruit from a tree. Alarmed by the sight of the elephant in close quarters, a resident jumped off the terrace, out of fear and sustained severe injuries', the villagers said.

Reacting to their complaint, the forest officials set a trap to capture the calf. The team led by DFO Ramasubramaniam tranquilized the calf and captured it. As planned, the calf was shifted to Varagaliyar Sanctuary, Topslip.

'Whether the calf will be let back into its habitat or will be detained at the camp and transformed into a kumki, is yet to be decided' shared the forest officials.
