Coimbatore Omni Bus Stand Renovation to be Completed in August

The Omni Bus Stand in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, undergoing a ₹2.90 crore renovation, is set to be completed in August. The project aims to improve facilities for the increasing number of private buses and passengers.

Coimbatore: The renovation work of the Omni Bus Stand in Gandhipuram, one of the busiest bus terminals in Coimbatore, is expected to be completed by August this year. The project, which began last October, aims to upgrade the facility at a cost of ₹2.90 crore.

The Omni Bus Stand, located near the G.P. Signal in Ward 48 of the Coimbatore Corporation's Central Zone, spans approximately 1.5 acres. It primarily serves private buses, while government buses operate from other terminals in Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, Mettupalayam Road, and Singanallur.

The decision to upgrade the bus stand was made considering the increasing number of private buses, growing passenger footfall, and the lack of essential infrastructure facilities. The foundation stone for the renovation and upgradation work was laid in October last year, with full-fledged construction beginning a few months ago.

The ongoing renovation includes the installation of a roof, bus parking facilities, toilets, shops, rainwater drainage systems, and nursing rooms for mothers with infants. The upgraded terminal is being designed to accommodate approximately 1,500 to 1,800 passengers, drivers, and conductors daily.

Initially, the Coimbatore Corporation had set a target to complete the construction within six months of commencement. While it was earlier expected to be finished by September, recent reports suggest that the modernization work will be completed in another 1.5 months, by August.

The renovated Omni Bus Stand is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for passengers using private buses in Coimbatore, addressing the long-standing need for better infrastructure at this busy terminal.
