Tribal Residents Complain of Substandard Construction Materials in Pollachi Housing Project

Tribal residents near Pollachi allege use of poor-quality mixture instead of cement in foundation work for new housing units, raising concerns about building durability in the hilly region.

Coimbatore: Tribal residents living near Pollachi have raised concerns over the quality of construction materials being used in a new housing project. The residents of Erumapparai and Koomatti settlements in Vettaikaranputhur Panchayat, located near Topslip in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, have complained that substandard materials are being used in place of cement mixture for the foundation work.

After many years, funds were allocated from the tribal development scheme to construct 25 housing units in these tribal settlements. The foundation work is crucial for the stability of any building, especially in hilly areas prone to heavy rainfall. Typically, a cement mixture is used to ensure the strength and durability of the structure.

However, the tribal residents were shocked to discover that instead of using a proper cement mixture over the stone foundation, contractors were using a poor-quality mixture. Concerned about the long-term implications, the residents met with Sub-Collector Catherine Saranya and submitted a petition regarding the issue.

The tribal people emphasized that houses in mountainous regions are already susceptible to damage within a few years due to heavy rainfall. They fear that using substandard materials in the foundation itself will significantly compromise the strength and longevity of the buildings.

"We have waited for many years for these housing units. We request the authorities to ensure that quality houses are built for us," the tribal residents appealed. They hope that immediate action will be taken to address their concerns and ensure the construction of durable homes that can withstand the challenging weather conditions of their hilly habitat.
