Two elderly couples in Coimbatore's Urumandampalayam narrowly escaped injury when a 90-year-old Velvel tree fell on their houses during heavy rain, causing damage to roofs and walls.

Coimbatore: In a close call, two elderly couples narrowly escaped injury when a 90-year-old Velvel tree fell on their houses in Urumandampalayam, Coimbatore, during heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 10 AM in the 14th ward of Coimbatore Corporation, on Uzhaippalar Street. The tree, uprooted due to the rain, crashed onto the homes of two elderly couples, causing significant damage to the structures.

One of the affected homes belongs to 75-year-old Srinivasa Babu and his 60-year-old wife Sarojini, both of whom are visually impaired. A large branch of the tree fell on their kitchen, but fortunately, the couple was in the hall at the time and escaped unharmed.

The neighboring house, occupied by 70-year-old Manikkam and his 62-year-old wife Vasanthamani, was also struck by another branch of the same tree. The elderly couple was outside their home when the incident occurred, thus avoiding any injuries.

Both houses suffered damage to their roofs and walls due to the impact of the falling tree. Upon receiving information about the incident, Ward 14 Councillor Chitra Thangavel, Village Administrative Officer Sivakumar, and Corporation Assistant Engineer Uthaman rushed to the scene.

The officials assured the affected families that appropriate measures would be taken to provide necessary assistance from the government. They are currently assessing the extent of the damage and planning for the removal of the fallen tree to prevent any further risks to the residents.
