Flood Alert Issued as Bhavani River Swells in Mettupalayam

Heavy rainfall in Western Ghats causes flood in Bhavani River. Pillur Dam reaches 97 feet. Water released, flood warning issued to residents along riverbanks and low-lying areas.

Coimbatore: The Bhavani River in Mettupalayam is experiencing a surge in water levels due to continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats region over the past few days. This has led to a significant increase in the water level of the Pillur Dam, which has a total capacity of 100 feet.

As of July 16, the water level in the Pillur Dam reached 97 feet, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. To ensure the dam's safety, officials decided to release water from the reservoir. At around 3 AM on July 16, approximately 16,000 cubic feet of water was discharged through four sluice gates into the Bhavani River. Additionally, 6,000 cubic feet of water was released for power generation.

In light of this situation, the district administration has issued a flood alert for residents living along the banks of the Bhavani River and in low-lying areas. People in these regions have been advised to exercise caution and stay vigilant due to the increased water flow in the river.
