Coimbatore's Small and Micro Industries Demand Rollback of Electricity Tariff Hike

Small and micro industry associations in Coimbatore held a meeting to discuss the impact of recent electricity tariff hike. They demand a return to the old tariff structure, citing adverse effects on businesses.

Coimbatore: Small and micro industry associations in Coimbatore have raised their voices against the recent electricity tariff hike implemented by the Tamil Nadu government.

A consultation meeting was held today at the CODISSIA complex to discuss the implications of the tariff increase on the industrial sector and to explore potential solutions.

Following the meeting, representatives from CODISSIA and other small and micro industry associations addressed the media, demanding that the Tamil Nadu government withdraw the recent electricity tariff hike and reinstate the old tariff structure. They expressed concern over the significant increase in the fixed charges for industries.

The industry representatives pointed out that under the previous tariff structure, the fixed charge was Rs. 35, which was beneficial for the industrial sector. However, the current hike has raised it to Rs. 160, creating an unsustainable situation for many businesses and hampering growth.

They highlighted the plight of Coimbatore's primary manufacturing industry - pump production and related foundry businesses. These industries typically face a slump during the rainy season, and the representatives argued that charging fixed rates even when machines are not in use is unacceptable. They warned that this practice would further weaken small and micro industries.

The industrialists also requested the removal of networking charges for solar panel electricity production. They emphasized that this additional cost burden is detrimental to the growth of renewable energy adoption in the industrial sector.

The industry associations announced their intention to meet the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in person to present their demands and seek relief from the increased electricity tariffs. They hope that their concerns will be addressed to ensure the sustainability and growth of small and micro industries in Coimbatore.
