Traffic Halted on New Road in Valparai Due to Sudden Pit Formation

A pit formed on a newly constructed road near Valparai in Coimbatore district, causing traffic disruption. The incident occurred due to heavy rains and improper drainage planning during road construction.

Coimbatore: Traffic has been halted on a newly constructed road near Valparai in Coimbatore district due to the sudden formation of a pit. The incident has caused significant inconvenience to the local residents and commuters.

The Valparai Municipality is currently undertaking a road construction project worth approximately Rs. 12 crore, covering a distance of 13 kilometers from Oosimalai Estate to Vellamalai Estate. The ongoing work involves laying stones over the old road surface.

In the Thanni Khan Shed area of Oosimalai Estate, there is a small stream. During recent heavy rains, the water flow in the stream increased significantly. However, the road construction work over the stream has obstructed the natural water flow, as the contractor failed to install proper drainage pipes beneath the road.

Typically, when constructing roads over streams, large pipes are installed to allow water passage before laying the road. In this case, the contractor proceeded with road construction without installing the necessary drainage system.

As a result of the recent heavy rains, water accumulation led to the formation of a sudden pit in the area, forcing authorities to halt traffic. This has severely affected the local population's daily commute and activities.

Residents have expressed their concerns over the lack of on-site supervision by officials during the road construction. They have urged government authorities to conduct regular inspections and oversee the work carried out by contractors and workers to prevent such incidents in the future.
