Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police have arrested a BJP media wing leader for allegedly posting defamatory content about Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. The arrest came following a complaint lodged by DMK officials with the District Superintendent of Police, Badrinarayanan, on July 19.
According to the complaint filed by Sharbudeen, the DMK Central District President of Coimbatore, and other party officials, a Facebook account named "Kunnathur Mudhalvar" had posted objectionable content about Prophet Muhammad, who is highly revered by Muslims. The post also contained derogatory remarks about Islamic leaders.
The complainants demanded the arrest and imprisonment of the person responsible for the post, urging appropriate punishment for the offense. Acting on the complaint, the Coimbatore District Cyber Crime Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the person behind the controversial post was Nandakumar (32), the BJP Media Wing Zonal Leader from Kunnathur area in Tiruppur district. The Cyber Crime Police summoned Nandakumar to the SP's office yesterday evening for questioning and subsequently arrested him.
The incident has raised concerns about the misuse of social media platforms to spread communally sensitive content. Local authorities have urged citizens to use social media responsibly and refrain from posting content that could hurt religious sentiments or disturb communal harmony.
