S.P. Velumani, MLA of Thondamuthur constituency, criticizes Kerala government for releasing 1000 cubic feet of water from Siruvani Dam on July 19. He accuses Coimbatore district administration and DMK government of inaction.
Coimbatore: S.P. Velumani, AIADMK MLA of Thondamuthur constituency, has condemned the Kerala government for releasing 1000 cubic feet of water from the Siruvani Dam on July 19 when the water level reached 42 feet. He accused the Coimbatore district administration, Public Works Department, and the DMK government of being spectators to this situation.
Speaking to reporters after attending the Tamil Nadu Higher Goods Association's grand event in Tudiyalur, Coimbatore, Velumani highlighted the importance of the Siruvani Dam as a major drinking water source for Coimbatore district. He stated that the dam, which has been supplying water to Coimbatore Corporation since MGR's time, has a height of 50 feet, but water is stored only up to 45 feet citing safety concerns.
Velumani claimed that during his tenure as Local Administration Minister, the Kerala government had cited dam safety concerns, but they had insisted on storing water up to 50 feet. He accused the Kerala government of releasing nearly 19% of the water under the pretext of dam safety, even though the dam remains secure.
The AIADMK leader criticized the DMK government for not bringing any new projects to Coimbatore district since coming to power. He emphasized that if the dam were filled to its full capacity of 50 feet, it would benefit the region for a year and prevent drinking water issues.
Velumani also pointed out that during the AIADMK rule, under the Smart City project, ponds and canals were desilted, and water from the Noyyal River was stored. He alleged that no such work is being carried out now, resulting in the Noyyal River water flowing into the sea.
The MLA further highlighted issues with other water bodies in the region, including the blockage of water to Sengulam and Kurichikkulam, and the obstruction of water to Krishnampathy Lake due to bridge construction. He called for immediate action from officials to desilt the lakes and store water.
Velumani recalled his efforts during the previous AIADMK government to implement the Anamalai Nallaru project in collaboration with the Kerala government. He urged the current Tamil Nadu government to immediately contact the Kerala government and insist on storing water up to 50 feet in the Siruvani Dam.
In conclusion, Velumani emphasized the importance of Pillur, Siruvani, and Aliyar as drinking water sources for Coimbatore district and reiterated his demand for the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action to ensure maximum water storage in the Siruvani Dam.
