Public Stages Sit-in Protest at Village Administrative Office Near Kangeyam in Tirupur

Over 30 residents from Pullakalipalayam near Kangeyam staged a sit-in protest at the village administrative office, demanding suitable land for free housing plots allocated by the government.

Coimbatore: A tense situation unfolded near Kangeyam in Tirupur district as more than 30 residents staged a sit-in protest at the village administrative office. The protesters, hailing from the Arunthathiyar community in Pullakalipalayam, expressed their dissatisfaction over the allocation of land for free housing plots.

The Tamil Nadu government had issued free housing plot pattas to over 20 individuals from the community on March 8, 2024, following a four-year struggle and numerous petitions. However, the actual land allocation was delayed for five months, leading to growing frustration among the beneficiaries.

The situation escalated when the district administration recently designated a plot of land for the housing scheme, which the residents claim is unsuitable for habitation. The protesters accused the government of allocating substandard land for their homes, despite funds being allocated under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam (Chief Minister's Dream Home) scheme for house construction.

The demonstrators are demanding that the district administration and the state government reconsider the land allocation and provide them with a more suitable location for building their homes. The sit-in protest has created a stir in the Kangeyam area, with tensions running high as the residents continue their demonstration at the village administrative office.
