Annual Chithirai festival begins at Big Temple with flag hoisting

THANJAVUR: The annual Chithirai Peruvizha commenced at the world renowned Big Temple, a world heritage monument, here with flag hoisting on Friday morning.

The flag was taken out in procession through the four main streets and hoisted in the presence of Sivachariyars and J Bharanidharan, Assistant Commissioner, HR and CE.  In the evening, idols of Vinayagar and Chandrasekar were taken out in procession.

The 18-day- festival will go on till May 8. Car festival is scheduled to take place on May 5.

A large number of devotees thronged the temple to worship.
