Coimbatore: A tragic incident unfolded at the Coimbatore Central Prison on August 1, as a 48-year-old prisoner named Siva, also known as Thatha Siva, from Thavidupalaiyam in Karur district, committed suicide by hanging himself.
Siva, who was serving his sentence as a convict, was assigned to book binding work in the third block of the central prison. The Coimbatore Central Prison houses over 2,000 convicts and undertrial prisoners, providing various small-scale work opportunities such as tailoring, maintenance work, and book binding to help rehabilitate the inmates.
On the fateful day, Siva attempted to end his life by hanging himself with a cloth from a window in his block. Alert prison wardens and guards quickly intervened and rescued him. They immediately provided first aid at the prison hospital before deciding to transfer him to Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment.
Unfortunately, despite the swift action taken by the prison staff, doctors at the government hospital declared that Siva had died en route. The Race Course Police have registered a case and are currently investigating the circumstances that led to Siva's suicide.
This incident has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of prisoners in the facility. The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter to prevent such occurrences in the future and to ensure better support systems for inmates struggling with mental health issues.
