Aliyar Dam Overflows for 6th Time: 1347 Cusecs Released Through 11 Sluice Gates

Aliyar Dam near Pollachi has reached its full capacity for the sixth time, prompting authorities to release 1347 cusecs of surplus water through 11 sluice gates. Flood warnings issued to riverside residents.

Coimbatore: The Aliyar Dam near Pollachi has reached its full capacity for the sixth time this season, leading to the release of surplus water through its sluice gates. The dam, which has a maximum storage level of 120 feet, reached 119.50 feet, prompting authorities to take immediate action.

As of this morning, the dam was receiving an inflow of 1225 cusecs. To ensure the safety of the dam structure, officials have opened 11 sluice gates to release 1347 cusecs of excess water. This measure was taken despite a decrease in rainfall over the past week, as water continues to flow from the catchment areas.

The continuous heavy rains in the Western Ghats region over the past few days have led to increased water levels in several dams, including Sholayar, Aliyar, and Parambikulam. The rapid rise in water levels has necessitated the release of surplus water to maintain dam safety.

In light of the water release, flood warnings have been issued to residents living along the riverbanks. Authorities have urged people in these areas to exercise caution and remain vigilant due to the potential risk of flooding.

The situation is being closely monitored by the district administration and water resources department to ensure the safety of both the dam and the nearby communities. Residents are advised to follow instructions from local authorities and stay informed about any further developments.
