Five Students Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case on Codissia Road

Five undergraduate students were arrested for a hit-and-run incident on Codissia Road, Coimbatore, which resulted in the death of a home guard and injured a special sub-inspector on Sunday morning.


Coimbatore: The Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW), East, arrested five undergraduate students on Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on Codissia Road in the early hours of Sunday. The accident claimed the life of a home guard and left a special sub-inspector injured.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ajay Rahul (21) from K.K. Pudur near Saibaba Colony, Sai Krishna (23) from Codissia Road, Sarvesh Kumar (22) from Ondipudur, Jai Dhakshan (21) from Singanallur, and K. Saifullah (21) from GM Nagar. All five are students at a private college in Kuniyamuthur.

According to police reports, the incident took place around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when special sub-inspector Ravi from Peelamedu station and home guard K. Prabhu (31) of Sowripalayam were on patrol duty. Their two-wheeler was struck by a car on Codissia Road. Prabhu died on the spot, while Ravi suffered fractures and was admitted to a private hospital.

The driver of the car, identified as Rahul, did not stop to assist the victims and fled the scene. Police investigations revealed that all the accused, except Saifullah, were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Despite Saifullah's request to drive the car, Rahul insisted on taking the wheel.

The TIW team, led by Inspector A. Thangamani, examined surveillance camera footage to identify the vehicle involved in the accident. This led to the arrest of Rahul and his four companions. The five students were produced before the court late on Monday.

This incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the roads. The Coimbatore police are likely to intensify checks to prevent such incidents in the future.
