Amaravathi Dam Receives 20,000 Cusecs Inflow at Midnight - Flood Warning Issued for Riverside Villages

Amaravathi Dam near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district received a sudden inflow of 20,000 cusecs at midnight due to heavy rains in catchment areas. Flood warnings have been issued to over 50 riverside villages.

Coimbatore: The Amaravathi Dam near Udumalpet in Tiruppur district experienced a sudden surge in water inflow late last night, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings to nearby villages. The dam, which had seen reduced inflow in recent days due to lack of rainfall, received a massive influx of 20,000 cusecs around 1:30 AM.

The unexpected increase in water flow is attributed to heavy rains in the dam's catchment areas, including Pambaru, Thuvaanam, Marayur, and Kaandallur. As a precautionary measure, excess water was released through the main sluice gates to maintain the dam's safety.

In response to the situation, flood warnings have been issued to more than 50 riverside villages, including Kallapuram, Rudraalyam, Kolumam, Madathukulam, Karatholavu, and Kaniyur. As of 6 AM today, the dam's water level stands at 88.09 feet against its full capacity of 90 feet. The current inflow is 2,576 cusecs, while the outflow is 3,386 cusecs.

Public Works Department officials are conducting round-the-clock monitoring of the dam area on a rotational basis. The continuous rainfall in the catchment areas has put authorities on high alert, and they are closely watching the situation to ensure the safety of residents in downstream areas.
