Water Release from Bhavanisagar Dam in Erode to Irrigate Over 1 Lakh Acres in Three Districts

Bhavanisagar Dam released water into Lower Bhavani Project canal on Thursday, benefiting 1,03,500 acres in Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts for 120 days.


Erode: Water was released from Bhavanisagar Dam into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal on Thursday, marking the beginning of the first crop season. The release aims to irrigate 1,03,500 acres across Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts.

Minister for Housing and Urban Development S. Muthusamy and Minister for Information and Publicity M.P. Saminathan officially initiated the water release by raising the dam shutters at 5 p.m. The event was witnessed by Erode Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, officials from the Water Resources Department, and representatives of farmers' associations.

Speaking to the media, Minister Muthusamy explained that water would be released for 120 days using an alternating system. The 'odd number' sluice gates and 'even number' sluice gates in the Chennasamudram canal ayacut areas would be utilized to benefit 91,000 acres in Erode district, 10,500 acres in Tiruppur district, and 2,000 acres in Karur district. He stated that approximately 23,846.40 million cubic feet of water would be released for irrigation until December 12.

The Minister assured that sufficient water was available in the dam, and the catchment area had been receiving consistent rainfall in the past few days. As of 6 p.m. on the day of release, the inflow stood at 4,678 cusecs, while the discharge was distributed as follows: 250 cusecs into the LBP canal, 500 cusecs into Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals, and 100 cusecs into River Bhavani for drinking purposes.

The current storage in the dam was reported at 26.02 tmc ft against its full capacity of 32.80 tmc ft. The water level was recorded at 96.43 ft, approaching the full reservoir level of 105 ft. This water release is expected to significantly boost agricultural activities in the region, providing much-needed irrigation for the first crop season.
