A mother sold her newborn daughter due to poverty near Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore. Police arrested the mother, intermediary, and buyer, rescuing the infant.

Coimbatore: In a shocking incident near Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, three women were arrested for their involvement in the sale of a newborn girl. The child's mother, an intermediary, and the buyer were taken into custody by the police, who also rescued the infant.

Adhikanesh, 25, a worker at a local garment factory, and his wife Nandini, 22, residents of Chinnakannaan Puthur in Samisettipalayam, already had a three-year-old son. When Nandini became pregnant again, the couple, struggling with poverty, decided to sell their newborn daughter shortly after her birth on August 14 at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital.

Devika, 42, from Sathya Nagar in Kasturi Palayam, learned about the couple's intention to sell the baby and approached Nandini. Devika claimed that a childless couple, Maheshwaran and Anitha from Koodlur Goundampalayam Manthoppu, wanted to adopt the child. Acting as an intermediary, Devika facilitated the sale of the newborn to Anitha for Rs. 1 lakh, taking a commission from both parties.

The incident came to light when child welfare officials received information about the sale. They filed a complaint at the Periyanaickenpalayam Women's Police Station in Thudiyalur. The police registered a case and arrested Nandini (the mother), Devika (the intermediary), and Anitha (the buyer). The newborn girl was rescued and is now under the care of child protection services.

Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine if Devika has been involved in similar child trafficking cases in the past. The incident has raised concerns about child protection and the desperate measures some families resort to due to extreme poverty.
