Students of Sinkhona Government School identify 111 bird species in 4 days

Students of Sinkhona Government School have lately been investing a lot of their time and effort in bird counting and research. Sinkhona Government School is located at Valparrai, in the Western Ghats. Recently, these students were ranked first on the international tables as they identified 111 species of birds in just 4 days. Although they had quite a few competitors, none of them were able to match this feat of theirs. They also studied impact of environmental changes on birds.

Teachers have been the backbone in order for the students of Sinkhona to pursue bird watching. They have sponsored binoculars for the students of their own limited means and pockets. Ganesh, a teacher of the school explained, “Bird watching has greatly helped the intellectual nourishment of our students. Earlier they used to stone birds at sight, however, now it intrigues them.”

Some of the species they identified are, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Grey Wagtail and Ashy Prinia. NCF, an organization, has been of great help to these students. In the Tirunalveli Bird Meet 2016, 3 students of the school- Santhosh, Maitheshwaran and Hari Krishnan, were given an opportunity to do a presentation on the birds found in Sinkhona.  About 70 girls and boys from the school have actively been pursuing bird watching.

Birds are the first indicators of environmental change, and by studying them, students of this school grow into wiser and more knowledgeable individuals.
