Coimbatore: Residents of Amma Chetti Puthur village in Pasur Panchayat near Annur, Coimbatore district, staged a protest against an industrialist's alleged encroachment of a public road and water channel for constructing a compound wall.
The area, known for its agriculture and livestock farming, is located on the border of Coimbatore and Tirupur districts. Recently, an industrialist reportedly purchased land in the area with plans to establish an iron foundry or casting unit.
As part of the project, a compound wall is being constructed for about one kilometer. However, villagers claim that this construction is encroaching upon the panchayat-owned road and the adjacent water channel. In response, the residents of Amma Chetti Puthur initiated a protest, entering the construction site to halt the work.
The protesters emphasized that the road has been used by villagers for generations, and the water channel is crucial for draining rainwater during monsoons. They accused the private individual of prioritizing profit over public interest and urged authorities to intervene.
Another concern raised by the villagers is the presence of deep, well-like pits dug for the compound wall's foundation. These pits, reportedly over 20 feet deep, pose a risk to livestock and children in the area.
The villagers have called upon relevant officials to inspect the site and take appropriate legal action to address their concerns and protect public property.
