Coimbatore: A massive fire broke out at a furniture godown in Coimbatore on Tuesday afternoon, causing extensive damage to property and goods. The incident occurred at 'Balaji Cushion Works', a furniture warehouse owned by Mookkaiah, located in Oor Goundar Thottam on Mini Bus Road in Chinnavedampatti, under the jurisdiction of Saravanampatti police station.

The fire is believed to have been triggered by a short circuit in low-voltage power lines near the godown. Strong winds caused the power lines to rub against each other, resulting in an electrical leak that produced sparks. These sparks ignited the fire, which quickly spread throughout the warehouse.

Upon receiving information about the fire, the Fire and Rescue Services Department promptly responded to the scene. Three fire tenders were dispatched to combat the blaze. Firefighters worked diligently to bring the fire under control and eventually extinguished it.

The fire caused significant damage to the furniture godown, with goods estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 50 lakhs being destroyed in the inferno. The entire area was engulfed in thick smoke, creating a hazardous environment for nearby residents and businesses.

The Saravanampatti police have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. Authorities are also looking into whether proper safety measures were in place at the warehouse to prevent such accidents.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of electrical safety and the need for regular maintenance of power lines, especially in areas prone to strong winds. It also highlights the necessity for businesses to implement robust fire safety measures to protect their assets and the surrounding community.
