Conch-blowing Protest in Udumalaipettai Against Municipal Administration

Over 100 people participated in a conch-blowing protest in Udumalaipettai, condemning the municipal administration for blocking a long-used public pathway and alleged encroachment of a water body.

Coimbatore: A conch-blowing protest was held in Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur district, on September 11, marking the death anniversary of Mahakavi Bharathiyar. The protest, organized by CPIM, saw over 100 participants condemning the municipal administration's recent actions.

The demonstration was sparked by the closure of a long-used public pathway near the newly constructed bus stand on Palani Road. The bus stand, built at a cost of ₹4 crore as part of the municipality's centenary celebration, has effectively blocked the path connecting Yasodha Ramalingam Layout, which residents have been using for many years.

Protesters demanded the immediate reopening of the pathway for public use. They expressed frustration that despite appeals from various groups, the municipality has not taken action to restore access. The organizers warned of continued protests if their demands are not met.

Another point of contention raised during the protest was the alleged encroachment of the Kazhutharuthan Odai (stream). Demonstrators accused the administration of allowing the water body to be converted into residential plots, further fueling their anger against the municipal authorities.

The protest highlighted growing tensions between the local community and the Udumalaipettai municipal administration. As the standoff continues, residents are calling for swift action to address their concerns and restore what they see as rightful public access to long-established pathways.
