Coimbatore: The route from Ukkdam flyover to Sungam intersection has been opened for public use from September 11. This development allows motorists coming from Aathupalayam junction towards Ukkdam to use the flyover to reach Sungam intersection. Similarly, those travelling from Sungam can now utilize the Ukkdam flyover.
The Ukkdam flyover, stretching from Ukkdam to Aathupalayam, was constructed by the State Highways Department at a cost of Rs 481.95 crore. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated this flyover on August 9. However, at the time of inauguration, the ramp for vehicles coming from Sungam intersection to enter the flyover via Valangulam Road, and the descending ramp for those coming from Aathupalayam junction were not completed. The target was set to finish these works by the end of August.
To prevent accidents, officials were instructed to install road safety reflectors, put up information boards, and fix electric lights at necessary locations. After taking the required precautionary measures, a trial run of vehicles was conducted. Highway Department officials camped in the area for two hours to study and assess any difficulties in vehicle movement. As the traffic flow was smooth without any hindrances, the ascending and descending ramps on Valangulam Road were opened for use.
Now, motorists coming from Sungam intersection can use the Ukkdam flyover to reach Pollachi Road or Palakkad Road via Aathupalayam junction. Similarly, those coming from Aathupalayam junction can use the descending ramp near Ukkdam Bus Stand area to reach Sungam.
As the next phase, work has begun to construct permanent roundabouts in front of Ukkdam Bus Stand and at Aathupalayam junction. State Highway Department officials have also mentioned plans to grow plants in these areas.
