Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Addresses Media in Coimbatore, Clarifies GST Issues and Other Concerns

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a press conference in Coimbatore, addressing various issues including GST, bank accounts, and political matters. She clarified concerns raised about GST collection and distribution to states.

Coimbatore: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the media at a private hotel on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, responding to various questions on GST, state finances, and political issues.

Regarding the recent comments made by Annapoorna Hotel owner about GST, Sitharaman stated that the owner had spoken in his style, which was not wrong. She explained that a committee comprising representatives from all states is conducting a thorough study on GST rates for various products. The minister emphasized that no GST-related decisions are made without addressing objections.

Addressing criticism about Tamil Nadu receiving less GST returns despite contributing more, Sitharaman expressed concern over such misunderstandings from Tamil Nadu government officials. She clarified that 50% of the collected tax goes to the central government, and 50% to the state government. Of the central government's 50%, 41% is further allocated to state governments. The Finance Minister explained that the Finance Commission determines the distribution of collected taxes to states, and she has no authority to increase or decrease this allocation.

Sitharaman refuted claims about penalties on bank accounts with minimum balances, calling it false news. She assured that no penalties are imposed on Jan Dhan, current, or savings accounts used by the poor. The minister warned of action against banks if they impose such penalties.

On the Vishwakarma scheme, she clarified that it has no connection to caste and covers 18 listed professions, providing assistance to anyone engaged in these occupations.

The Finance Minister also touched upon political issues, questioning the actions of those claiming to be against caste politics in Tamil Nadu. She raised concerns about reports of fecal contamination in drinking water and highlighted the inconsistency in anti-Hindi stance while some schools run by family members of these politicians teach Hindi.

Sitharaman criticized the Congress party for its past actions in Mizoram and compared it with the current government's handling of the Manipur situation. She urged the media to question the Congress about the Mizoram riots.

Regarding Chennai Metro, the minister defended the central government's contributions and asked not to spread misinformation about lack of central support.

The Finance Minister also commented on Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to the USA, accusing him of meeting with anti-India elements. She questioned whether the DMK would raise concerns if their alliance partner's actions were against national interests.

Lastly, Sitharaman expressed her condolences on the demise of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.
