Coimbatore: A 65-year-old man has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment for sexually harassing a 12-year-old girl in Coimbatore. The incident took place in August 2022, and the verdict was delivered by the POCSO Special Court on September 12.
The accused, Mohan alias Mohanraj, a 65-year-old daily wage worker, sexually harassed the minor girl who was a classmate of his grandson. The girl, a 6th-grade student, often played with Mohan's grandson at their house.
On the day of the incident, while the children were playing, Mohan sexually harassed the girl who was hiding in a room. He also threatened to kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone.
The girl's parents filed a complaint at the Women's Police Station. Following an investigation, the police confirmed the sexual harassment and arrested Mohan under the POCSO Act.
Judge Kulasekharan of the Coimbatore POCSO Special Court delivered the verdict. In addition to the five-year prison sentence, Mohan was fined Rs. 5,000 for the sexual harassment charge. For threatening the girl, he was sentenced to one year in prison and fined Rs. 1,000, to be served concurrently.
The court also directed the government to provide Rs. 2 lakh as compensation to the affected minor girl.
