119 Tons of Flowers and Vegetables Shipped from Coimbatore Airport for Onam Festival

Coimbatore Airport handled 119 tons of flowers and vegetables in 4 days for Onam festival. Officials report 5 tons of coriander booked in just 2 days, highlighting surge in domestic cargo.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore International Airport has witnessed a significant surge in cargo handling, shipping 119 tons of flowers and vegetables to various domestic cities over the past four days in preparation for the Onam festival.

The airport's domestic transport division typically handles about 25 tons of outbound cargo daily, serving cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. However, with Onam festival approaching, to be celebrated on Sunday, September 15th, there has been a notable increase in the volume of perishables being processed.

Airport officials provided a breakdown of the recent cargo handling: "On Tuesday, we processed 34 tons, followed by 33 tons on Wednesday, 27 tons on Thursday, and 25 tons on Friday. This four-day total of 119 tons significantly exceeds our usual volumes." The officials added that carrots, beetroots, bitter gourds, and drumsticks were among the vegetables in high demand, along with coriander and flowers.

Notably, coriander saw an exceptional surge in bookings. "Over Wednesday and Thursday alone, we handled about 5 tons of coriander, dispatched to various cities," an official stated. The demand for flowers has also been on par with vegetables during this festive period.

The surge in cargo handling is primarily observed in the domestic sector. The international cargo division hasn't reported any significant increase in vegetable or flower shipments specifically for the Onam festival.

This spike in cargo handling at Coimbatore Airport underscores the economic importance of regional festivals and their impact on local agricultural exports. It also highlights the crucial role that air transportation plays in ensuring fresh produce reaches markets across the country in time for festive celebrations.
