Four Shopkeepers Arrested for Illegal Sale of Beedi and Cigarettes in Coimbatore

Coimbatore police arrested four shopkeepers for selling beedi and cigarettes near educational institutions, violating regulations. The arrests were made during a routine patrol in various areas of the city.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have arrested four shopkeepers for illegally selling beedi and cigarettes near educational institutions, violating the regulations in place.

On September 18, Sub-Inspector Ajay Sharma of Ukkadam Police Station was on a routine patrol in the Town Hall area. During the patrol, he discovered a petty shop opposite a women's B.Ed training college selling beedi and cigarettes. The police confiscated 148 cigarettes from the shop. The shopkeeper, Balasubramani (60) from S.S. Colony, Ondipudur, was arrested in connection with the illegal sale.

In a similar incident on Kamarajar Road in Singanallur, Vellaturai (42) from Masakalipalayam was arrested for selling beedi and cigarettes from his petty shop. The police seized 12 packets of beedi and cigarettes from his possession.

Continuing their crackdown, the police arrested Manivasagam (74) for selling beedi and cigarettes from his shop on Kamarajar Road in Uppilipalayam. 21 packets of beedi and cigarettes were confiscated from his shop.

In another raid at a petty shop in Varadarajapuram, the police seized 23 packets of beedi and cigarettes. The shop owner, Kanagaraj (70) from Balaji Nagar, Varadarajapuram, was subsequently arrested.

The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of the Coimbatore City Police to enforce regulations prohibiting the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions and to curb the illegal sale of beedi and cigarettes in the city.
