Coimbatore: Information Technology Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan conducted an on-site inspection of the newly constructed building at the Information Technology Special Economic Zone complex in Vilankurichi, Coimbatore. The facility, built at a cost of ₹114.16 crore, is nearing completion after facing delays for over four years due to various reasons since its announcement during the previous administration.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Minister Thiagarajan stated that the building would be fully completed within the next two weeks and inaugurated by the Chief Minister. He added that the facility would provide opportunities for small and micro enterprises, as well as new entrepreneurs, and is expected to create job opportunities for 3,200 people.
The minister recalled that during his tenure as Finance Minister, he had announced plans to develop Coimbatore, North Chennai, and Hosur as high-tech cities with facilities on par with Bengaluru and Hyderabad. He assured that work on these projects is progressing and efforts are being made to expedite the process.
Reflecting on his time as Finance Minister, Thiagarajan mentioned that he had pointed out deficiencies in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. He expressed hope that if the central government is willing to consider reforms with good intentions and provide opportunities for all, amendments to the GST could be implemented quickly.
The completion of this IT Special Economic Zone complex marks a significant step towards boosting Coimbatore's position as a technology hub and creating more employment opportunities in the region. The facility is expected to attract both local and international IT companies, further contributing to the city's economic growth.
