The inaugural Kumaraguru Model United Nations 2024 kicked off at Kumaraguru Institutions in Coimbatore. The three-day event features 200 student ambassadors from across India, discussing global issues and honing diplomatic skills.

Coimbatore: The first edition of Kumaraguru Model United Nations 2024 (KMUN'24) commenced today at Kumaraguru Institutions, bringing together students from across India to simulate the activities of the United Nations.

The three-day event was inaugurated by T P Sreenivasan, IFS, Former Ambassador & Permanent Representative for India to United Nations, who delivered the keynote address via online mode. Approximately 200 student ambassadors and leaders from colleges and institutions across the country, including major cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum, and Hyderabad, are participating in the event.

Over the next three days, students will discuss and debate important global issues, trying to find solutions through teamwork and negotiation. It helps students learn about world problems, practice speaking in public, and improve their skills in working together and solving problems.

The committee sessions will provide aspiring diplomats with an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue, develop leadership skills, exchange ideas and opinions and foster a deep understanding of global issues.

Keynote Address from T P Sreenivasan, IFS, Former Ambassador & India’s Permanent Representative to UN:

In an engaging address at the Kumaraguru Model United Nations 2024, T P Srinivasan, a distinguished diplomat and former ambassador, shared his insights on the significance of diplomacy and the evolving role of the United Nations.

With nearly forty years in international relations, including roles in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, he stressed the importance of understanding the countries that participants represent.

Srinivasan acknowledged the UN's achievements over the past 77 years but pointed out fundamental flaws that hinder its effectiveness, particularly the imbalance within the Security Council. He noted that the structure, established post-World War II, no longer reflects the current global power dynamics, which have led to ongoing conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Gaza crisis.

He highlighted recent developments, including the U.S. announcement to consider reforms in the Security Council, suggesting the need for additional permanent members to better represent today's geopolitical landscape.

Addressing the participants, he stressed the importance of consensus-building in diplomacy, urging students to engage deeply with the countries they represent. He encouraged them to embrace the experience, learn the procedures of the UN, and identify passionately with their assigned nations.

Srinivasan expressed hope that some of the students would one day serve in the UN, carrying forward the ideals of diplomacy and international cooperation. He commended Kumaraguru Institutions for fostering such an essential learning environment and wished the participants success in their deliberations.

Presidential Address by Shankar Vanavarayar, President of Kumaraguru Institutions:

Today marks our 41st Foundation Day, and it is a pleasure to welcome you all to this special occasion, which aligns with the Kumaraguru Model United Nations event.

This gathering aims to empower young individuals to become globally aware citizens. It is essential for educational institutions to create environments that foster diplomacy, critical thinking, and decision- making—skills crucial in our interconnected world.

Reflecting on the origins of the United Nations in 1945, we acknowledge the vision of leaders like President Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, who aimed to establish a framework for global unity. They could not have imagined that students from Coimbatore would be engaging in diplomatic discussions today, yet here we are, embodying that vision.

The UN Charter is more than just a document; it represents values such as peace, justice, human rights, and tolerance. In an age filled with various conflicts—be they environmental or social—it's vital that we uphold these guiding principles.

We face not only geopolitical challenges but also issues like mental health and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. As you engage in discussions over the next three days, I encourage you to consider how these topics intersect with the values enshrined in the UN Charter.

While we celebrate significant advancements, we must also recognize that our diversity can lead to divisions. The challenges we encounter necessitate collaboration, drawing inspiration from leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, whose ideals resonate globally.

Participating in this Model UN is more than a simulation; it is a foundation for real-world impact. The connections you forge here can drive significant change in your communities and beyond. I urge you to share your ideas, challenge existing norms, and envision a future that reflects our collective values.

I commend the organizers and student leaders for their dedication in making this event possible. I look forward to engaging with you in the upcoming sessions. Thank you for being here today. Let’s celebrate knowledge, collaboration, and the spirit of diplomacy.

Speech by G. Ragupathy, Director of Strategic Planning and Review, Kumaraguru Institutions:

He asked participants to prepare well and research their country’s position, understand the committee’s objectives, and craft their opening speeches carefully. Effective communication, negotiation, and diplomacy are crucial.

I wish all participants the best of luck. This event is a unique opportunity for learning and growth, and I look forward to seeing the insightful debates and resolutions you will propose. May the best individuals and teams shine throughout these three days. Thank you!

Speech by Miss Anita Kumari, Faculty Convener General It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to the inaugural Kumaraguru Model United Nations 2024. This event unites young minds from 178 institutions across India, creating a platform for diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, and decision-making.

Over the next three days, you will engage in meaningful discussions on pressing global issues, challenging perspectives and cultivating essential leadership skills. Remember, this Model UN is not just about debate; it’s a vibrant arena for respectful dialogue and collaboration. As you advocate for democracy, human rights, and climate action, your voices represent not just your institutions but also a generation committed to understanding and impacting the world.

I encourage you to embrace this experience fully and build lasting connections. Let’s celebrate knowledge, understanding, and the spirit of diplomacy.

P Samerithaa, Secretary General of Kumaraguru MUN 2024 and student of the political science department of Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science declared the conference open.
