Pappammal, a 110-year-old farmer from Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district, who received the Padma Shri award, passed away due to ill health on Friday night.

Known for her unwavering passion for agriculture, Pappammal continued to practice organic farming even in her advanced age.
Her dedication to farming caught the attention of the central government, which honored her with the prestigious Padma Shri award two years ago. During the award ceremony, Pappammal famously sought blessings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi by touching his feet. Recently, she was also conferred with the Tamil Nadu government's Periyar Award.
Pappammal had been bedridden for some time due to her declining health. She breathed her last at 8:30 PM on Wednesday. Her body has been placed at her residence in Thekkampatti for people to pay their last respects.
The centenarian farmer's life was a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in agriculture. Despite her age, she continued to advocate for organic farming practices and inspired many with her commitment to sustainable agriculture. Her passing marks the end of an era in the farming community of Tamil Nadu.
