Coimbatore: The State-wide palm seed plantation drive is set to make its mark in Coimbatore as 1,000 palm seeds will be planted along the Noyyal river bank on Monday. This local effort is part of a larger initiative aimed at planting one crore seeds along the banks of the Cauvery and other water bodies across Tamil Nadu.
Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran shared details about the city's participation in this eco-friendly campaign. "We have an ambitious plan to plant over one lakh seeds in Coimbatore city, with the Corporation targeting 25,000 seeds," he stated. The Commissioner emphasized the multiple benefits of this initiative, explaining, "This project is designed to prevent soil erosion along river banks and water bodies, enhance groundwater recharge, and provide economic opportunities through the multi-purpose uses of the palmyra tree."
Currently, lakes have been selected as the primary planting sites in Coimbatore. However, the Corporation is open to expanding the scope of the project. "We will be taking suggestions from NGOs into account and will add more locations for palm seed planting," Prabhakaran added.
The palm seed plantation drive demonstrates Coimbatore's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. By participating in this state-wide initiative, the city is contributing to the preservation of water bodies, improvement of soil quality, and potential creation of livelihood opportunities for local communities.
