Mountain Railway Service Resumes Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor After Two-Day Suspension

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, suspended for two days due to landslides, resumed operations today. The scenic route attracts both domestic and international tourists.

Coimbatore: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, which had been suspended for two days due to landslides, resumed operations today. The picturesque train journey, popular among both domestic and international tourists, offers breathtaking views of the Western Ghats.

The suspension of services was prompted by heavy rains that lashed Ooty, Coonoor, Pykara, and surrounding areas in the Nilgiri district on the night of September 29.

The downpour triggered landslides between Kallar and Adderley railway stations on the Mettupalayam-Ooty route.

Large and small boulders rolled onto the tracks, while fallen trees obstructed the railway line.

Railway authorities immediately halted the mountain train service on September 30 and October 1. During this time, railway workers were engaged in repairing and clearing the damaged tracks. The restoration work was completed yesterday evening.

Following the announcement by the Salem Railway Division that services would resume today (October 2), tourists began gathering at Mettupalayam station early in the morning, eager to experience the scenic journey.

As scheduled, the mountain train departed from Mettupalayam to Coonoor at 7:10 AM. Excited tourists boarded the train, ready to enjoy the spectacular views of the lush mountainous landscape along the route.

The resumption of this iconic mountain railway service is not only a relief for the tourism sector but also a delight for travelers who can once again experience the charm of the Nilgiri hills from the comfort of this historic train.
