Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation conducted a major encroachment removal drive on Thursday, clearing 90 encroachments along the 80 Feet Road near Olympus. The operation was led by assistant town planning officer Govinda Prabhakar, who utilized an earthmover to remove the illegal structures.

Police personnel were deployed during the eviction drive to ensure smooth proceedings and prevent any untoward incidents. The encroachments, which had been present for several years, primarily consisted of concrete steps, ramps, steel structure extensions, and sheets built over the stormwater drains in front of 90 shops, including bakeries, fruit stalls, small hotels, and fancy stores.

A corporation official stated that due to these encroachments on both sides, the road had narrowed to just 55 feet. "We have cleared one side of the road for a stretch of 800 metres, while on the other side, shop owners voluntarily removed the encroachments. However, there are seven or eight ramps that still need to be removed. We plan to address these on Monday," the official explained.

The official further added that vehicular movement on the road had been disrupted for a long time due to these encroachments. As part of the operation, four pushcarts were also seized from the area. To deter future violations, shop owners have been warned that a minimum fine of ₹5,000 will be imposed if they encroach on the road again.

This encroachment removal drive is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and restore the intended width of the 80 Feet Road, benefiting both motorists and pedestrians in the area.
