Madras High Court Revokes Coimbatore Mayor's Suspension Order Against AIADMK Councillor

The Madras High Court on October 3 revoked Coimbatore Mayor Ranganayaki Ramachandran's order suspending AIADMK councillor Prabhakaran from attending three council meetings. The suspension followed a heated debate during the September 13 council meeting.

Coimbatore: The Madras High Court on Tuesday (October 3) revoked the suspension order issued by Coimbatore Mayor Ranganayaki Ramachandran against AIADMK councillor Prabhakaran of Ward 47. The mayor had suspended Prabhakaran from attending the next three corporation council meetings.

The incident stemmed from the Coimbatore Corporation Council meeting held on September 13. During the meeting, AIADMK councillor Prabhakaran criticized the DMK government, stating that it had been a "sticker government" for the past three years. He alleged that the current administration had not introduced any new schemes and was merely implementing projects initiated during the AIADMK regime.

This criticism led to a heated debate between councillors of the two parties in the council meeting. Amidst the chaos, Mayor Ranganayaki Ramachandran issued an order barring Prabhakaran from participating in the next three council meetings.

Challenging his suspension, Prabhakaran filed a case in the Madras High Court, claiming that he had not committed any wrongdoing. On September 25, the High Court had directed the Coimbatore Mayor to respond to the petition.

In yesterday's hearing, the court issued an interim stay on the mayor's suspension order. This ruling effectively allows Prabhakaran to participate in the upcoming corporation council meetings.

The court's decision marks a significant turn of events in the ongoing political tensions within the Coimbatore Corporation Council, highlighting the checks and balances in local governance.
