Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have announced complete traffic restrictions on the GD elevated flyover for two consecutive nights to facilitate the installation of AI-enabled surveillance cameras aimed at curbing speeding violations.
The flyover, stretching from Uppilipalayam to Chinniyampalayam, has been a subject of concern following complaints about young motorists driving at excessive speeds and causing accidents. The issue prompted police authorities to initially consider closing major flyovers in the city during night hours to prevent such incidents.
However, when flyovers were suddenly barricaded without prior notice, it led to massive traffic congestion across the city, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. Following public outcry, the police abandoned the plan to close flyovers during night hours and instead decided to implement a technological solution.
The authorities opted to install AI-powered cameras capable of detecting speeding vehicles and issuing automatic fines. The surveillance cameras were initially installed on a trial basis and demonstrated effectiveness in monitoring traffic violations.
Currently, a comprehensive camera installation project is underway on the GD flyover. To facilitate this technical work, the Coimbatore City Police have imposed temporary traffic restrictions for two nights.
According to the official announcement, all types of vehicular traffic will be completely prohibited on the GD elevated flyover from 10 PM to 6 AM on both January 25 and January 26. During these restricted hours, motorists are advised to use the alternative Avinashi Road route instead of the flyover.
The police department expects the AI camera installation to be completed within these two nights, after which normal traffic flow will resume. Once operational, these cameras will automatically detect vehicles exceeding speed limits and issue challans to violators, serving as a deterrent against reckless driving on the busy flyover.
The move is part of the city police's broader initiative to enhance road safety through technology-driven enforcement measures.
