Stock Verification Underway in 69 Closed TASMAC Shops Across Coimbatore District

Authorities have begun verifying liquor stock worth several crores of rupees in the 69 TASMAC outlets recently shut down across Coimbatore district. Once the stock assessment is completed, the liquor bottles will be transferred to the TASMAC regional godown in Peelamedu.

Coimbatore: In Coimbatore district, 254 TASMAC outlets had been functioning before the recent closure drive initiated by the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Recently, the government announced that TASMAC shops located near schools, colleges, and places of worship would be shut down.

As part of the statewide initiative, 717 TASMAC outlets were ordered to be closed across Tamil Nadu, including 69 shops in Coimbatore district.

In the first phase, four outlets were shut on the opening day, followed by ten more on the second day. The remaining 55 TASMAC shops were closed yesterday.

Following the closures, officials have commenced the process of verifying the unsold liquor stock, valued at several crores of rupees, stored in the closed outlets.

According to TASMAC officials, operations in Coimbatore district are divided into Coimbatore North and Coimbatore South regions for administrative convenience. Of the 254 shops, 156 functioned under the North region, while 128 operated under the South region. Following the recent closures, 48 shops in the North region and 21 shops in the South region have been shut down.

With this, only 215 TASMAC outlets will continue to function in the district. In addition, 50 bars attached to the closed shops have also ceased operations.

Officials further stated that large quantities of unsold liquor remain stocked in the 69 closed outlets. To carry out the stock verification process, two officials have been assigned to each shop. Once the assessment is completed, the liquor stock will be transported by lorries to the TASMAC Regional Manager’s godown in Peelamedu.
