A 13-year-old boy who went missing in Coimbatore’s Irugur area was allegedly beaten to death by his friends using stones and a liquor bottle following a dispute during a fishing trip. Police have detained two juveniles aged 13 and 15 in connection with the murder.

Coimbatore: A shocking incident has come to light near Irugur in Coimbatore, where a 13-year-old boy was allegedly beaten to death by his minor friends using a liquor bottle and stones.

The deceased, identified as Ritheesh (13), was the elder son of Bharathiraja, a sanitation worker employed at the local town panchayat in Irugur. According to police, Ritheesh went missing on the evening of May 15. After searching several places without success, his parents lodged a complaint at the Singanallur Police Station.

Based on the complaint, Singanallur police registered a case and launched an investigation. During questioning, police interrogated the boy’s friends and uncovered the shocking truth that Ritheesh had been murdered.

Subsequently, police recovered the boy’s body from a secluded area near the Irugur railway halt and sent it to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for postmortem examination.

Preliminary investigation revealed that on May 15, Ritheesh had gone fishing in a canal near the Irugur Pongaliyamman Temple along with his friends. During the outing, an argument reportedly broke out among the boys. In a fit of rage, two of his friends — aged 13 and 15 — allegedly attacked Ritheesh with stones and a liquor bottle. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

Police have detained the two juveniles involved in the murder and are set to lodge them in a juvenile reform home.
