The trial in the sexual assault and murder case of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur began before the POCSO court in Coimbatore on Wednesday, with the two accused produced under heavy police security ahead of the examination of key witnesses.
COIMBATORE:The trial in the sexual assault and murder case of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district began before the Special Court for cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act here on Wednesday.
The two accused in the case — K. Karthi (35) and R. Mohan (31) of Pallapalayam near Sulur — were produced before the court under heavy police security ahead of the commencement of trial proceedings and examination of witnesses.

According to the prosecution, a list of witnesses to be examined on the first day of trial had been submitted before the POCSO court on June 16. Judge T. Bagavathiammal had adjourned the case to June 24 for commencement of the trial after framing charges against the accused earlier this week.
With the examination of key witnesses scheduled for Wednesday, the accused were brought from prison and produced before the court.
In view of the sensitivity of the case, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Bavan Kumar and Coimbatore Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Saminathan visited the court and reviewed the security arrangements and proceedings.
Police personnel were deployed in strength in and around the court complex. Further proceedings in the case, including recording of witness depositions, are under way.
